What is Shradh Puja?
Shradh Puja, also known as Shraddha or Pitru Paksha, is a significant Hindu ritual dedicated to honoring deceased ancestors. This ancient tradition plays a crucial role in ensuring the peace and prosperity of the family and is performed during the lunar month of Bhadrapada, specifically on the full moon day of Pitru Paksha.
Importance of Shradh Puja
The primary purpose of Shradh Puja is to pay homage to one’s ancestors and seek their blessings. It is believed that performing Shradh Puja helps in alleviating the souls of deceased relatives from their worldly troubles and allows them to attain peace in the afterlife. This ritual is deeply ingrained in Hindu culture and is observed with great reverence.
Shradh Puja Procedure
Preparation: Begin by gathering the necessary items for the ritual, including Pind (rice balls), sesame seeds, and water. Choose an auspicious day and time, ideally in the early morning, to conduct the puja.
Performing the Ritual: The Shradh Puja involves several key components:
Tarpan: Offer water mixed with sesame seeds to the ancestors while reciting specific mantras.
Pind Daan: Prepare and offer Pind (rice balls) to represent the ancestors’ souls.
Food Offerings: Prepare a meal and offer it to Brahmins or the needy, symbolizing the act of sharing with ancestors.
Prayers and Mantras: Recite specific mantras and prayers dedicated to the ancestors, seeking their blessings and peace for their souls.
Benefits of Performing Shradh Puja
Ancestral Blessings: Performing Shradh Puja is believed to ensure that the souls of deceased ancestors are at peace, which in turn brings prosperity and happiness to the family.
Removal of Pitru Dosha: It helps in removing Pitru Dosha, which is considered an obstacle in personal and professional life, caused by unfulfilled duties towards ancestors.
Spiritual Growth: The ritual is also a means of spiritual upliftment and gaining merit (punya) for oneself and family members.
Pitra Paksh, Shradh or Tarpan period is observed during Krishna Paksh( Waning Moon) in Bhadrapada Hindu Month. This is the period of remembering our ancestors by performing Shradh as per Hindu Panchang or on Amavasya day.
This is also very important period for Pitra Dosh/ Kundali Dosh Nivaran.This year Shubhpuja has made special arrangements for performing these sacred rituals at Ujjain ( Mahakaal), M.P. and Gaya in Bihar. Both these places are considered most sacred to perform prayers for peace of Departed Souls.

Annual Shradh- Rs.11000/- by 2 Pandits
Pitra Shanti Puja – Rs.31000/- by 4 pandits
Pitra Dosh Nivaran Puja- Rs.31000/- by 4 Pandits.
Shradh puja will take about 70 minutes and Pitra Pujas will take about 2.30 hours.
